Founded in 1922, today the National Union of Students represent five million students across the UK, providing them with a united voice, excellent benefits and helpful information and research. Over 700 Students’ Unions are members of NUS, including us at Surrey. The NUS constantly improve the lives and experiences of students in the UK, by ensuring their voices are heard and effectively represented; by developing democratic and strong student unions; and by providing collective benefits and access to information for all students. Benefits range from discounts with NUS Extra Cards, welfare advice and resources from www.nus.org.uk
On 30th October we hosted the NUS South Regional Conference here at Surrey. This meant that delegates from Students' Unions across the South spent the day in Wates House talking to the NUS National Executive Committee about a variety of ideas, developments and issues including 'Broke and Broken' (campaign about the funding system - see our campaigns section for more info) and the NUS reform.
Elizabeth (President) is the South East Regional Officer and so sits on the NUS's National Council.
The NUS also provide support for our sabbatical team (particularly VP Education, VP Welfare and the President) and help us to run the elections by acting as the Returning Officer.
