Hi my name's Dec and I'm a third year student studying International Politics currently on placement. I want to help students participate in activity by raising awareness of free and social events at University due to the limited student budget. I also want to help committee members by adding in additional tips on how to handle sport/society budgets. I also want to develop STARS so clubs and societies are rewarded for collaborating with charities as well as under represented groups, giving students the opportunities to have a greater impact.
With the rises in living costs, the student budget is being stretched to its limits, putting people off activities due to membership fees. I propose an information leaflet focusing on which Societies are free of charge, or what sessions are free to participate in. If students have more awareness of activity, it can only lead to higher engagement and student satisfaction.
There is a divide between Team Surrey and Societies. Both are rightly rewarded for certain collaborations. I believe this should be extended and rewards made for overall collaborations between Societies and Clubs. I am pushing for this to be included in the STARS award programme as well as rewarding those that are particularly inclusive.
Promotion - From Beginners to BUCS
For beginners: Virtually all Clubs and Societies cater for beginners by offering casual participation. But, many students struggle to believe their abilities are catered for. More must be done to promote casual sporting and opportunities with Societies at the University.
BUCS: Students love representing the Blue and Gold. From sporting cup runs to amazing societal pieces. More must be done from the Union to promote and celebrate student achievement across the University.
