It’s the VP's job to lead the Activity Zone. During the year, the Activity Zone deliver a number of campaigns to help promote student involvement with Activities, as well as help organise events such as Varsity, Colours Ball and Student & Society Awards. The Activity Zone is here to help students get involved in as many things as possible! Check out what sports clubs and societies are on offer at the side bar under 'Sports & Societies'.
Meet the Activity Zone
Hey everyone, my name is Luke, I'm currently in my fifth and final year here at the University of Surrey studying for an MEng in Civil Engineering. During my amazing time here at Surrey I have had the incredible opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities from rowing to surfing. Doing so has transformed my university experience meeting friends and making memories for life. University is a special time and I'm passionate about the positive impact joining societies and sports clubs can have on a person's university experience.
As Surrey Societies Chair I will:
- Encourage participation in students by helping to run campaigns that work to break down barriers to students getting involved
- Continue to promote Societies on campus helping them increase their social media presence with the continuation of the @SurreySocieties Instagram
- Improve communication between the union and students showcasing what societies have to offer with the introduction of a new Societies booklet as well as working with the university to provide improved digital communication on campus.
- Being a helpful point of contact for societies with any issues, questions or ideas they may have whilst delivering a fun and useful monthly Societies Standing
My name is Maya Altamimi, I'm currently doing a postgraduate degree and I am super excited to be your Tearm Surrey Chair! I am also an international student, and I know how difficult it is to study abroad sometimes, hence, I want to make sure all students feel welcome and encourage them to join sports clubs or try something new. I want to work with different clubs as well as societies to ensure everyone makes the most out of their university experience. I'm always happy tp answer any questions or address any issues you might have, so do not hesitate to contact me!
Hi my name's Dec and I'm a third year student studying international polotics currently on placement. I want to help students participate in activity by raising awareness of free and social events at University due to the limited student budget. I also want to help committee members by adding in additional tips on how to handle sport/society budgets. I also want to develop STARS so clubs and societies are rewarded for collaborating with charities as well as under represented groups, giving students the opportunities to have a greater impact.
Hi my name is Aman, I am a final year Economics and Finance Student. I have had many contributions to various societies during my time at Surrey but more significantly I was appointed as Treasurer on Bhangra society last year and am Vice President of the Indian Students Association (ISA) for the upcoming year. I strongly believe societies and sports clubs are very valuable to enhance one's university experience and provide the opportunity to meet new people with similar interests. This is why it is important to get involved and I am excited to use my position on the Activity Zone to encourage this.
I have three main focuses for this year which includes the following:
Encourage more collaborated society events to increase student participation and allow students from varied interests to socialise. In addition to this I would like to increase communication between societies and members where there is a possibility of providing anonymous feedback.
A large aim of mine this year is to encourage participation from those whom have missed previous opportunities to join societies and feel awkward in doing so at a later stage. Increasing the awareness of Refreshers' Fayre will also help with this matter.
My final aim is to maintain all of the current societies by ensuring they are operating well with regular events and good attendance.
Hi! I'm Caitlin and I'm on placement at the University of Navarre, Pamplona, Spain for a year. I study Biochemistry at Surrey. I am an active member of both Dodgeball and Pole Fitness. I have been on Dodgeball's committee as Women's Captain for 2018/19 and am their new Vice President for 2019/20. My aims for this year include promoting inter-society and sports collaborations; making sure everyone is supported within sports and societies. I also want to highlight the society and sport achievements throughout the year, using the Union's social media presence. My aim is to promote involvement in student activity at the University of Surrey.
