The Community Zone is led by the elected Vice-President Community and is responsible for bringing the student community together, integrating the student community into the local community, and ensuring that there are volunteering opportunities available for all students. This involves taking a lead on the entertainment & social activities on campus, welcoming new students and creating opportunities for students to participate in the local community.
Helena Mason VP Community
"My name is Helena and I am your VP Community for 2017-18. My role as a Vice-President is to represent all students and lead the Community Zone, which is made up of 5 part time officers. As a zone we focus on bringing students together and building a sense of community both within campus and within Guildford. We are responsible for all of the social and community activities that take place at Surrey, including entertainment, welcoming students, volunteering and fundraising as well as showcase events such as Colours Ball and Student and Societies Awards Ball. A key responsibility of the Community Zone is also to communicate the contribution of students to the local community and to deal with accommodation issues alongside the VP Support."

The Zone Committee are part-time volunteers who work on Community Zone projects. Students should contact the VP Community or the Community Zone if they have any ideas or feedback about the entertainment that the Students' Union provides; if they want to find out about volunteering and fundraising opportunities. They are all working on their own projects too so feel free to contact them.
Hi I am Alice, and I am a member of the community zone. This year I aim to continuing improving the relations between students and non-student residents living in Guildford via ensuring the community rep scheme is continued, via a growth in the number of reps and organising events with them off-campus. I also aim to ensure that students moving into off-campus accommodation are supported every step of the way, via introductory events and e-leaflets that are accessible at any time directing students towards everything they will come across when moving into private housing. I would further like to build on the system for choosing the events we hold, with ideas for fun, novel event ideas that could bring together individuals in a more interactive way.
Hi my name is Amber-Valetta and I am a member of the community zone and there are a few things I want to help improve this year. One of them is to help clubs and societies to promote their events in a more effective way which will benefit both them and students. If the events were more visible in a student friendly way, clubs and societies would get more people attending the events and the students have more events to attend - win win. I also want to promote volunteering not just in the local Guildford area but in the rest of the world, primarily through a Christmas campaign but also through working with societies.
Hi, I'm Gemma and I'm in my second year of Business. I'm on the community zone and this year I want to help make sure that everyone gets the best university experience, no matter who they are or their circumstances. I also want to help improve the image that students have in the Community through volunteer projects.
Hey! I'm Holly, one of your five Community Zone Union members dedicated to improving your time at Surrey both on campus and in Guildford. During my year as a Part-Time Officer, I will be working on three key ideas. Firstly, I will create more day-time and alternative Fresher's Week events to combat on-campus boredom and give those off-campus the Fresher's experience! Secondly, I will be working alongside the Union and the University Lettings Agency to develop existing housing resources that can empower us with the information we need to challenge our landlords to get the quality we are paying for. Thirdly, I will be working with the Volunteering Coordinator and RAG Coordinator to make opportunities to volunteer easier and more accessible!
Hi everyone My Name is Paul and I'm a member of the community zone, my main aims this year in the union is to strengthen the good relationship the student community is building with the resident community in Guildford. I also strongly wish to integrate the vast range of diverse cultures present on campus with the Guildford community whilst also helping international students from all over the world feel more welcomed and part of the university. This would help them make the most of their university student experience and also help the community residents have a taste of the diverse cultures the university has brought to Guildford.
